And This is what the convicted women on board the convict ships faced as they landed on to Australian soils .....

Riotous scenes as women are landed -

Port Jackson, Feb 6 1790. Scenes of riot and debauchery after the disembarkation of the women convicts tonight transformed Sydney cove into something resembling a gin palace attached to a brothel.

All this took place at night during a violent storm with lightening bolts which, at one place, split a tree in half, killing five sheep and a pig that were penned below it.

The licentious merriment began when some merchant seamen requested some grog from their captain.

No doubt the man had good reason to comply, in the relief at getting rid of the last of his convicts, as he had faced a penalty of £40 for every convict missing.

Soon the sailors and convicts were in and around the women's tents, some queuing for sex, others making love with women they had forged attachments on the voyage. Others were swearing, fighting or singing.

While the scene was deplorable no action by the Governor nor his officers. Presumably they thought that intervention would have provoked a serious riot, and that it was best to wait for the morning to re-establish order.

The women, cooped up on the voyage and for another 10 hot and intolerable days outside Sydney Cove, had not too many chaste figures among them.

Reports on trading convict women

London, Sept 28, 1798.Disturbing reports have been arriving of the degrading treatment of female convicts sent to New South Wales.

There have been descriptions of dreadful scenes upon convict vessels arriving in port.
The decks have been crowded with both settlers and male convicts alike, picking and choosing the women them as though they are no more sheep or cattle.

Some settlers want women for servants or wives, while the convicts are looking for wives.
Some women not chosen on the spot are then taken in open boats up the river to the settlement of Parramatta, where another selection process takes place. Those not chosen for particular purposes are then given the free will to go with whom ever they prefer.

Those who do not go with one man are assigned to take care of huts in which there are from two to ten men.

A gallows lament by young convict

Sydney cove, June 24. Samuel Payton, a 20-year-old convict, who will die on the gallows tomorrow for attempted robbery, has sent a most moving letter to his mother.

"My dear mother! With what agony of soul do I dedicate the last few moments of my life, to bid you an eternal adieu! My doom being irrevocably fixed, and ere this hour tomorrow I shall have quitted this vale of wretchedness. I have at last fallen an unhappy, though just, victim of my follies.

Banish from your memory all my former indiscretions and let the cheering hope of a happy meeting hereafter console you"

A woman convict is hanged for robbery

Sydney Cove, Nov 23 Ann Davis has been hanged, the first women in the colony to be "turned off" by the executioner.

She was found guilty of stealing clothing and goods from the house of convict Robert Sidaway, who co-habituated there with Mary Marshal. Davis was in the habit of calling by and smoking a pipe with them.

When they were away on November 14 she gained access through a window. After upsetting a tub of water in the house, she made off with her booty. It was later found in her possession.

Convict woman writes of life in 'this solitary waste of creation'

Norfolk Island, Nov 19 The plight of convict women has been describe in a letter which has been privately sent in a ship today.

A convict women writes of "our disconsolate situation in this solitary waste of creation"

" The inconveniencies.. suffered for want of shelter, bedding etc are not to be imagined by any stranger. However, we have now two streets in four rows of the most miserable huts you can possibly conceive of deserve that name"

The women are "deprived of tea and other things.... and as they are all totally unprovided with cloths, those who have young children are quite wretched.

"Several women, who became pregnant on the voyage, and are since left by their partners, who have returned to England , are not likely to form any fresh connections.

"We are comforted with the hopes of a supply of tea from China , and flattered with getting riches when our settlement is complete.

"Our Kangaroo rats are like mutton, but much leaner; and there is a kind of chickweed so much in taste like our spinach. Something like ground ivy is used for tea; but a scarcity of salt and sugar makes our best meals insipid.

"The separation of several of us to an uninhabited island was like a second transportation. In short, every one is so taken up with their own misfortunes that they have no pity to bestow on others"

Convict Women in the Colony

Only about 11% of the total number of the working convicts transported to Australia were women. And these women brought with them skills which were immediately useful and contributed markedly to the growth of the colony. In the main these women were employed as general servants, laundresses, kitchenmaids, needleworkers and housemaids. These women did not need to struggle to adapt their working skills to the new environment of the colony. This in direct contrast to the 89% male convict arrivals who were ranked in importance as to the nature and severity of their crime - the reason they were transported - and as such their significance or insignificance was rated. Unfortunately historically the convict women were lumped in together coming under the single derogatory term of "useless whores". Although based on the scant evidence available only about 20% of the transported convicts did actually practise prostitution prior to their arrival in Australia (making this a figure of only 2.2% of the initial total convict population). On this basis it could be said that skills of the women were overlooked and their productive output was not recoqnised to it's full potential;and nor was the potential of their productivity fully reached by the young colony. A sad fact when each and every contribution should have been recoqnised and attributed.

Excerpt From "The Crimes of The First Fleet Convicts" author John Cobley

And this excerpt relates to our young forebear Ellen Wainwright alias Esther Eccles - why the alias I don't as yet know....

WAINWRIGHT, Ellen
alias ECCLES, Ellen
Place and Date of Trial: At Preston Quarter Sessions in January 1787
Crime and Sentence: "Ellen Wainwright alias Ester Eccles of Rishton, single-woman, stole one woollen cloak, 1 petticoat, 1 silk hat, property of William Standen"
Occupation: Age:
Appears in Council No.5 (Mainwright alias Esther Eccles), p26; Ross's Returns (Mainwright alias Wainwright), p.251.
Reference: (1) Lancashire Record Office, Quarter Sessions Papers.
Excerpt From "The Crimes of The First Fleet Convicts" author John Cobley page 278.
***************************

I do wonder how this particular petticoat would have suited Mr William Standen? Although I would guess that these stolen articles of clothing probably belonged to the female members of his family, either his wife or daughter, and as such were assumed to be his sole property.

There is a family story floating around that maybe Mr. Standen suffered an unrequited affection for pretty, little and young Miss Wainwright and that this is how this upright man of the community exacted some small revenge upon her. Then again it could have a female member of his family acting out of spite or malice - maybe she was prettier than they and needed to sent away for a long trip overseas!

The Good Ship "The Prince of Wales" One of the First Fleet Convict Transport Ships.

The First Fleet is the name given to the 11 ships which sailed from Great Britain on May 13, 1787 to establish the first European colony in New South Wales. It was a convict settlement, marking the beginnings of transportation to Australia. The fleet was led by Captain (later Admiral) Arthur Phillip.

People of the First Fleet
- information taken from http://www.statemaster.com/encyclopedia/First-Fleet

The number of people directly associated with the First Fleet will probably never be exactly established, and all accounts of the event vary slightly. Gillen (see References below, p.445) gives the following statistics:

Embarked at Portsmouth

* Officials and passengers: 15
* Ships' crews: 324
* Marines: 247
* Marines wives and children: 46
* Convicts (men): 579
* Convicts (women): 193 mr hankey the christmas poo! some1 waz 'ere!
* Convicts' children: 14
* Total embarked: 1418

Landed at Port Jackson

* Officials and passengers: 14
* Ships' crews: 306
* Marines: 245
* Marines wives and children: 54
* Convicts (men): 543
* Convicts (women): 189
* Convicts' children: 22
* Total landed: 1373

During the voyage there were 22 births (13 boys, 9 girls), while 69 people either died, were discharged, or deserted (61 males and 8 females). As no complete crew musters have survived for the six transports and three storeships, there may have been as many as 110 more seamen. See section below for list of notable Fleet members.

Ships of the First Fleet

The "SIRIUS" was the flagship of the First Fleet, built in 1780 as a merchant vessel. Bought by the Navy and refitted in 1781, it was finally lost at Norfolk Island in 1791. Our Ellen Wainwright, who had arrived on "PRINCE OF WALES", was on the "SIRIUS" when it was wrecked. Its Captain, John Hunter (1793) said of his human cargo, "....the convicts (were) some of the worst characters ever sent out from Great Britain."

The Voyage To Australia

This was one of the world's greatest sea voyages — eleven vessels carrying about 1400 people and stores had traveled for 252 days for more than 15,000 miles (24,000 km) without losing a ship. Forty-eight people had died on the journey, a death rate of just over three per cent. Given the rigours of the voyage, the navigational problems, the poor condition and sea-faring inexperience of the convicts, the primitive medical knowledge, the lack of precautions against scurvy, the crammed and foul conditions of the ships, poor planning and inadequate equipment, this was a remarkable achievement.

http://www.statemaster.com/encyclopedia/First-Fleet

The ship "The Prince of Wales" carried only one male convict and 49 female convicts. Ellen Wainwright aka Esther Eccles travelled aboard this ship to Australia as punishment for her crime of stealing clothing to the value of 30 shillings. The Prince of Wales weighed 350 tons and was skippered by Master John Mason. She was built at the Thames in 1786.

She operated in England until 1797 when her registration was transferred to Fort Royal, Martinique, after which, little is known.

The convict cargo of the "Prince of Wales" is as follows and includes Ellen Wainwright - alias Esther Eccles.

Australia's First Fleet - From Barbara Turner, 1992.1

Capt. Arthur Phillip, R.N. was commissioned as the first Governor
of New South Wales. He set sail on May 13th, 1787 from
Portsmouth with 11 vessels. He arrived in N.S.W. with 717
convicts of whom 180 were women, guarded by 191 marines under 19
officers.

Note: The incorrect spellings of some place names is how they
appeared in the newspaper. Some of those listed did not arrive in
Australia as they either did not embark or died en route

Note

1. This article is extracted from the file CONVICTS.ZIP, which was authored by a Barbara Turner in 1992 and which is available on many genealogical bulletin boards (BBSs) world-wide.

The list of convicts appears to have been transcribed from a fictitious newspaper, the London Chronicle of October 1788, which appeared as a four-page "souvenir lift-out newspaper" in the Sydney Daily Mirror on Monday 20 January 1969. In the article which announced the publication (Friday 20 January 1969 p. 9), the Mirror stated that the newspaper, one of a series of five, would be written "in the style of the day" and "follow the enormous success of our London Gazette newspapers which last year covered Captain Cook's voyages". The souvenir was compiled by the "Mirror's Insight team". No sources were cited.

A follow-up article on Tuesday 21 January 1969 advised: "Because of the great interest in the Mirror's historical newspapers, arrangements have been made to reprint them all on imported antique paper. Hundreds of readers have telephoned to say they were fascinated by the full list of names of the convict arrivals in the First Fleet. The reprints are expected to be available next week."

It is important to remember that no single, authoritative list of First Fleet arrivals exists. The best researched and documented work on the First Fleet is undoubtedly Mollie Gillen's The Founders of Australia: a biographical dictionary of the First Fleet, Library of Australian History, Sydney, 1989.

For those who are unfamiliar with the term "First Fleet" it actually applies to the first ships that sailed from the UK to Australia and I quote from :
"The First Fleet is the name given to the 11 ships which sailed from Great Britain on May 13, 1787 to establish the first European colony in New South Wales. It was a convict settlement, marking the beginnings of transportation to Australia. The fleet was led by Captain (later Admiral) Arthur Phillip...... Admiral Arthur Phillip RN (11 October 1738 to 31 August 1814) was a British naval officer and colonial administrator. ..."
